Field Assignment of Field Epidemiology Concentration Students in Sikka Regency, NTT
Emergency Situation & Health Response Summary
Udayana University, through the Master of Public Health Science (MIKM) Program, Faculty of Medicine, is actively contributing to the management of the health crisis resulting from the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara. This contribution is carried out through the deployment of MIKM students specializing in Field Epidemiology as part of the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) Indonesia.
Two FETP students from Udayana University, Putu Dian Andryani and Nyoman Dian Pradnya Paramitha, were deployed as epidemiologist support personnel to assist the public health response in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The assignment follows an official request from the Ministry of Health through the Directorate of Surveillance and Health Quarantine, Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control, as part of the emergency response to the Flores Earthquake on August 15, 2026.
Follow-up on Ministry of Health Request
In its official request, the Ministry of Health highlighted that deploying FETP students and mentors was essential due to the ongoing health crisis in the affected regions and suboptimal surveillance systems in several areas.
FETP students and mentors from various academic institutions have been deployed to bolster epidemiological workforce availability in the affected areas from August 26 to September 9, 2026.
Field Placement and Strategic Role of Epidemiologists
In Sikka Regency, Putu Dian Andryani and Nyoman Dian Pradnya Paramitha are stationed alongside mentor Avelinus Serbianus Nong Erwin from the Sikka Regency Health Office. Both are officially designated as FETP Udayana University students deployed to Sikka Regency.
Throughout this deployment, the students support disaster epidemiological surveillance, data collection and analysis, health situation monitoring, and the strengthening of epidemiological intelligence to inform post-disaster health emergency operations.
Disaster Impact & Demand for Data-Driven Response
This operational role is essential given the scale of the disaster in East Nusa Tenggara. According to the situation report by the Indonesian Humanitarian Coordination Platform (IHCP) as of August 27, 2026, 175,909 people were displaced across affected regions, and 118 health facilities sustained structural damage.
Sikka Regency alone recorded over 7,500 displaced individuals, underscoring the urgent need for local health surveillance and reinforced emergency measures.
The Ministry of Health also reported that Health Emergency Operation Centers (HEOC) have been activated across eight locations, including provincial headquarters and seven impacted regencies. This emergency response framework relies heavily on rapid, accurate epidemiological data to guide decision-making during the crisis.

For MIKM students, participating in this emergency response serves as a valuable opportunity to directly apply epidemiological competencies in field conditions, work within formal health emergency operations, and gain first-hand insight into public health dynamics during crises.
The participation of FETP Udayana University students highlights MIKM UNUD's ongoing commitment to building epidemiological capacity and promoting data-driven public health emergency responses across Indonesia.
