Youth Reproductive Health: Reduce Unplanned Pregnancies
Youth reproductive health is a crucial element in the development of a healthy and empowered younger generation. One of the primary challenges in youth reproductive health is unplanned pregnancies, which have negative physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts on young people. Unplanned pregnancies often occur due to a lack of understanding about reproductive health, limited access to youth-friendly healthcare services, as well as social and cultural norms that hinder comprehensive sexual education.
Additionally, peer pressure and ineffective contraception use also contribute to this issue.
In response to these concerns, students and faculty members from the Master's Program in Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, organized a community service activity at SMA Negeri Blahbatuh, Gianyar, focusing on youth reproductive health. This activity aimed to increase adolescents' awareness of the importance of reproductive health, supporting the government's efforts to reduce the rate of unplanned pregnancies among youth.
The community service activity included a social media competition (reels) and a training session for youth tutors on how to reduce unplanned pregnancies. The social media competition was designed as a learning activity where SMA students actively participated by creating a maximum two-minute IG Reels video on reproductive health. The video submission period ran from February 25 to March 5, 2025, via Google Drive. These videos were evaluated by Ibu Dinar Saurmauli Lubis, S.KM., MPH., PhD, and Ibu Dr. Luh Seri Ani, S.KM., M.Kes, both faculty members of the Public Health Program at Udayana University, with expertise in health promotion and maternal and child health. The evaluation criteria included creativity, originality, message accuracy, and educational value. Winners were announced on the same day as the youth tutor training session on March 8, 2025.
The training session for youth tutors featured speakers from the Gianyar Health Office, discussing adolescent reproductive health to prevent unplanned pregnancies, including measuring maternal health through LiLA and BMI measurements. Ibu Opy Sulaeman from the Bali Kosala Foundation also shared tips on being a fun and confident tutor.
The participants in the community service activity were 12 representative groups of grade XI students (totaling 60 students) from SMA Negeri 1 Blahbatuh, as well as members of the youth reproductive health organization (PIK-R). To ensure the sustainability of the project, a presentation was held by selected PIK-R members to discuss follow-up plans and how they could serve as catalysts for future activities at the school.
The results of the interactive discussions and observations during the event showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge, both in reproductive health content and in communication skills for delivering information. The enthusiasm of the participants was evident in the numerous questions asked during the Q&A sessions and their eagerness to create and present social media content.
For the students of the Master's Program in Public Health, this activity served as a learning experience to enhance teamwork skills with various professionals, including students, faculty, school principals/teachers, health offices/community health centers, and non-governmental organizations, all under the guidance of the faculty advisor. Community service activities are a part of the curriculum for the Master’s Program in Public Health and are conducted at least once a year.
This activity has positively impacted the community, particularly by equipping students with essential reproductive health knowledge, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and empowering the next generation to take an active role in addressing public health challenges. The ripple effect of this event will continue as PIK-R members carry forward the initiative, ensuring that the lessons learned will be passed on to future generations of students.
