Workshop of Developing Articles for International Publication
University lecturers and students must generate international publications in respected journals. Yet, they frequently face time constraints and lack effective writing skills and strategies for framing arguments to enhance publication prospects. To combat these challenges, the Master of Public Health Program at Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University organized a two-day workshop on scientific writing and manuscript development for international publication. The workshop took place in Saranam Baturiti, Tabanan – Bali on July 7-8, 2023.
The workshop saw participation from lecturers of the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Udayana University, Warmadewa University, and Ganesha University. Moreover, MPH students who had finished their master's theses also attended the workshop. All participants were expected to arrive with a manuscript draft for further refinement during the workshop.
The workshop commenced with a concise participant introduction and clarification of their expectations. Dr. dr. Anak Agung Sagung Sawitri, MPH, then led a brief lecture on crafting writing structure and refining thesis arguments. Following the lecture, participants immediately applied these strategies to their own manuscripts. Following that, Dr. I Nyoman Sutarsa, MPH, PhD., FHEA, conducted succinct presentations on crafting each manuscript section—introduction, methods, results, discussion, abstract, and cover letter. Each presentation was followed by 'pomodoro practice': focused 25-minute writing sessions succeeded by 5-minute breaks for discussion or reflection. Moreover, participants learned tactics for selecting suitable journal targets to avoid predatory journals. Dedicated time for manuscript discussions with facilitators was also allocated. In total, the workshop encompassed 20 pomodoro sessions (500 minutes of guided intensive writing) and one 30-minute 'writing clinic' for each participant.
The participants warmly embraced this workshop and expressed a desire for its regular recurrence due to its substantial benefits in enhancing their international journal writing. Dr. Yuli Kurniati, M.Kes, a lecturer participant, stands out as she accomplished publishing her manuscript in a Scopus-indexed Q4 international journal just three weeks after the event. The workshop afforded her a focused environment and framing strategies to effectively address reviewers' feedback on her manuscript.
Anticipating further positive updates from fellow participants, we aim to establish this approach in the future to facilitate prompt publication in esteemed journals. This step aligns with the overarching vision of the MPH Program, Faculty of Medicine, and Udayana University, advancing their journey towards becoming a globally renowned academic institution.
