Guest Lecture Dr Matthew Kelly "Nutrition Transitions And The Double Burden Evidence From Rural Central Java"

Matthew Kelly is a lecturer specializing in Epidemiology, and Population Health, the Australian National University Canberra. He explained about the Nutrition Transition in Central Java, Indonesia. His presentation stated that in Asia there has been a nutritional transition caused by economic developments and accompanied by changes in people's diet and lifestyle. This phenomenon also occurs in Indonesia. Changes in diet and lifestyle cause a shift in nutritional problems, namely Indonesia faces a double burden of malnutrition or malnutrition change.

In his presentation Matthew concluded that
     1. Double-burdened households are common in rural Java and have a significant impact on nutrition programs
     2. Diets that characterize the nutritional transition are emerging among the younger generation, namely increasing dietary diversity but also increasing consumption of unhealthy foods
     3. Obesity is highest in middle-aged women.
     4. Consumption of soybeans and processed products such as tofu and tempeh protects against anemia Processed products of soybeans have the potential to promote health in the context of reducing consumption of animal foods.
