A student from the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) at Udayana University, Ni Nyoman Sugihani, has been deployed by FETP Indonesia under the Ministry of Health to support the investigation of a Leptospirosis outbreak in East Nusa Tenggara, starting April 6, 2026.

This deployment reflects FETP’s core learning approach—training in real outbreak settings. Under the guidance of field mentors from the Kupang District Health Office, national experts, and university supervisors, the student actively contributes to outbreak investigation while strengthening her epidemiological skills.

Every two days, findings are presented through Situation Reports (SitReps) in coordination meetings involving national teams, local health authorities, and affected health facilities. On April 9, 2026, during the second SitRep, Nyoman Sugihani successfully delivered her progress despite field constraints such as limited connectivity, gaining valuable feedback to improve the investigation.

For FETP students, such field exposure is transformative. It builds the capacity not only to analyze data, but also to lead outbreak responses, collaborate across systems, and translate evidence into action.

This initiative underscores Udayana University’s commitment to preparing field-ready epidemiologists who are capable of responding to public health emergencies and strengthening Indonesia’s health security.
