Food Safety: Implications for Public Health

In tandem with initiatives for economic empowerment, the Government of Indonesia has implemented policies aimed at bolstering economic opportunities at the micro-level, particularly targeting individuals with modest to moderate economic means. These policies have effectively contributed to Indonesia's economic growth, particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. One sector experiencing notable growth is the food industry, with a surge in entrepreneurial endeavors. However, a pertinent issue arises regarding the awareness and adherence to food safety standards within this burgeoning sector. Particularly in Bali, a prominent tourist destination heavily impacted by the pandemic, the proliferation of micro-enterprises in the food industry raises concerns regarding food safety within the community.

In response to these circumstances, the Bachelor and Master Programs of the Public Health Faculty at Udayana University organized a guest lecture on April 29, 2024, held at the esteemed Prof. Dr. I Goesti Ngoerah Gde Ngoerah hall. The primary objective of this lecture was to cultivate awareness among academics and students regarding the practical implementation of food safety measures in Southern Thailand. Given Thailand's reliance on tourism and potential parallels with Bali's food industry, this lecture held significant relevance.

The issue of food safety has been implicated in a spectrum of diseases commonly affecting travelers and the general populace. Beyond concerns about biological pathogens, food safety encompasses the inappropriate use of chemical substances aimed at enhancing food performance, preservation, or visual appeal, often at the expense of safety standards and at minimal cost.

The featured lecturer, Assistant Professor Prassert Makkaew from the University of Walailak in Thailand, delivered a presentation titled "Ensuring Food Safety in Southern Thailand: Strategy and Case Study." Facilitating the intellectual discourse was esteemed moderator Made Ayu Hita Pertiwi, S.Si, Msc., PhD.

The event commenced with opening remarks by the Head of the Bachelor of Public Health Study Program, expressing gratitude to Professor Prassert for his invaluable contributions. Emphasizing the importance of such academic exchanges, she highlighted their role in enriching the educational journey of students at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, particularly in raising awareness of the multifaceted aspects of food safety in relation to public health.

Following a comprehensive presentation of pertinent research findings, an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session ensued, involving a diverse cohort of students, lecturers, and medical professionals from the Bachelor and Master of Public Health Science Study Program. Additionally, the event was attended by participants via online platforms.

Through the dissemination of knowledge and collective engagement, participants were equipped to navigate and address the challenges posed by this complex health issue, thereby contributing to advancements in healthcare practices and policies. This event exemplifies ongoing collaborative learning initiatives by the study programs, aligning with the university's overarching vision and mission. It is anticipated that this lecture will offer valuable insights and catalyze future activities for students and lecturers alike, spanning research, education, and community service in this critical domain.
