FETP Udayana contribute in investigation of Anthrax cases in East Java
Ministry of Health Republic Indonesia (Directorate of Surveillance and Health Quarantine) with the Indonesia Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) requested FETP Udayana, FETP Unair, and FETP Gajah Mada to be involved in the investigation of Anthrax cases in Pacitan District East Java. One student of the Master Program of Public Health stream Field Epidemiology, namely I Putu Aditya Anggriawan (batch 14, 2022) was sent to Pacitan on 7 August 2023, where he will gather with two other residents from FETP Universitas Airlangga to perform the field work, which will be directly supervised by mentor from Universitas Gajah Mada and Airlangga Surabaya, supported by mentor and staff from Universitas Udayana (Dr. dr. Anak Agung Sagung Sawitri, MPH and Dr. drh. I Made Subrata, M.Erg), FETP Indonesia, Ministry of Health, CDC, Health Security Partner, East Java Province and Pacitan District Health Office.
Investigation was performed in 14 days (7 to 20 Aug 2023) at Tinatar Village, Punung sub-district, Pacitan district. Instead of District Health Office, the Puskesmas Gondosari and Puskeswan Punung district were also involved, as Anthrax is a disease that is transmitted by domestic animals. Every night, daily meeting with the whole team was performed to know the progress and update result of investigation through online application.
Geographical difficulties, limited transportation and internet access, less support behaviour from some of the local residence and collaborative sectors were some of challenges to be faced by students. However, in 2 weeks-investigation, the team was managed to find out new Anthrax human cases and determine the possible mode of transmission which has occurred in the district. The result of investigation was presented to related human health and animal health sectors in 18 of August 2023, to promote health actions recommendation to prevent further transmission among the community.
Many positive benefits for field learning for the FETP students and mentors, as well as the whole team. In addition, this action is a contribution of the FETP Udayana for Community Services as part of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi; and to strengthen and extent the collaboration with national and international sectors to gain the vision of Udayana University.
