Epidemiological Investigation of Leptospirosis Outbreak Conducted by FETP Students and Mentors in Buleleng Bali Indonesia

FETP Udayana students Mitha Yuliani and Ari Suantari, alongside mentors from Gianyar District Health Office represented by Dewa Oka Harimbawa, and mentors from Bali Provincial Health Office represented by Putu Dwi Adi and Wayan Sugihana, conducted follow up investigation on a Leptospirosis outbreak on April 26, 2024. The investigation team was received by FETP mentor Komang Suardani, who is also a surveillance staff at Buleleng District Health Office.

Leptospirosis, a disease transmissible by rodents infected with the Leptospira bacterium, has thus far yielded only one confirmed case. However, epidemiological inquiries into human contacts and rodent hosts persist to forestall disease expansion. Sample examinations from humans and animals are also underway to confirm diagnoses. This activity serves as a continuum of prior investigative endeavors.

For the FETP students, engaging in outbreak investigation represents firsthand learning exposure to Public Health cases and how to manage them. These include ensuring safety and security when handling infectious materials, acquiring information regarding vector animals, conducting blood sample examinations on humans and animals, among other skills. Student activities are closely guided by field mentors who are experience Public Health practitioners. Moreover, campus supervisors provide substantial academic support. It is noteworthy that field mentors are alumni of both FETP Udayana and FETP UGM, underscoring Udayana's institutional commitment to networking and empowering its alumni, particularly those serving in relevant governmental departments.
